The laboratory provides integrated infrastructure for the preparation, characterization, and imaging of geological and materials science samples. The laboratory is designed to support research activities ranging from routine petrographic analysis to advanced microstructural investigations, including high-resolution applications such as EBSD.

Our facilities combine precision sample preparation with optical and electron microscopy, ensuring high-quality surfaces and reliable analytical conditions. The laboratory is equipped for cutting, mounting, and polishing of rock, mineral, and material specimens, following protocols tailored to the specific requirements of each technique. Our services include:

  • Precision cutting using a low-speed saw (samples up to 5 × 5 cm);

  • Epoxy resin mounting (samples up to 2 × 2 cm);

  • Polishing of thin sections and mounted samples using alumina, diamond paste, and colloidal silica, with emphasis on preparation for EBSD analyses;

  • Optical microscopy imaging with a LEICA DMLP microscope equipped with transmitted and reflected light systems and a Zeiss Axiocam MRc5 camera;

  • Secondary and backscattered electron imaging using a JEOL JSM-5510 scanning electron microscope (SEM), with qualitative chemical analyses performed by an EDS system (Thermo).
